One of our female ducks.

We keep a small number of Muscovy ducks who occasionally honour us with an egg or two!

Ducks live for 2-12 years depending on their breed. They also lay eggs without a male around.

  • If a duck is raised with a different species, it can sometimes believe that it is a human, a chicken or even a dog!
  • Ducks' feet have no nerves nor blood vessels. This means ducks never feel the cold, even if they swim in icy cold water.
  • Ducks' feathers are waterproof. There is a special gland that produces oil near the tail that spreads and covers the outer coat of feathers. Beneath this waterproof layer are fluffy and soft feathers to keep the duck warm.
  • Ducks do not need to live on water — they can live perfectly happily without as long as they have got plenty to eat, drink and a draught free place to shelter.
