We have three pygmy goats called Midge, Maddy & Flip. Midge is Maddy’s mum and Maddy is Flip’s mum!
Maddy is named after the place where they came from - ’La Madrinie’ and Flip was named after Midge flipped
him up in the air shortly after he was born!! Flip was born on 23rd Jan 2006. Maddy was born around February 2005.
We do not know when Midge was born. Pygmy goats can live for fifteen years or more.
- Pygmy goats originated in Africa.
- They were imported into this country at the end of the 19th Century as a zoo animal.
- Pygmy Goats are friendly, playful, and love to have structures to climb on.
- They hate rain, and repeated soakings will make them unwell.
- They like to sleep on platforms rather than on the floor.
- Entire males do not make good pets as they become strong-willed and will develop an unpleasant smell. This comes from musk glands around the horn and the front
legs; the adult male spends much of his time spraying his head and body with urine to enhance the odour!
- We do not disbud or dehorn our goats. Horns on a goat act as a "cooling mechanism" that connect to the sinus
cavities at the head. Horns are mostly used to scratch with and are not used aggressively. Goats do use them
to spar with each other during play-fights but this does not lead to any injury.
