We have two pigs called Norman and Dee, they are called Norman and Dee because their parents lived in Normandy!
Dee was born on 31st May 2005. Norman was born on 30th July 2006. They should live until they are around 15 years old.
Pigs can be fed any fruit or vegetables. They are particularly partial to apples, plums and cooked potatoes!
- Kune Kune pigs are a small pig from New Zealand. Their name is pronounced Cooney Cooney, and means ‘fat and round’ in Maori.
- Contrary to popular belief, pigs are very clean animals and have separate toilet and sleeping areas. In the summer they wallow in mud to cool down.
- Pigs are among the four most intelligent animals in the world, and, because they are almost continuously motivated by food, they can be trained very easily.
- When fully grown, they are between 60 and 75 cm high, and 120 to 240 pounds in weight. They are completely covered in hair which can be anything between short and straight, and long and curly. They come in a range of cream, ginger, brown, black and spotted.
- The most unusual feature of most Kune Kune pigs is a pair of tassels, called piri piri, under their chin like a goat. This is not unique to the Kunes but it is unusual.
- Temperament wise, they are delightful, being placid and very friendly. They thrive on human company.
